MY READING LIST FOR 2019

Welcome back and Happy New Year (If I haven’t told you already)!

Last week I did a video on my channel all about my New Year’s Resolutions and Goals for 2019. Like most people probably are, I’m trying work more on my self-development this 2019. That includes consuming more content that provides knowledge and valuable information! For me, that’s podcasts and books.

I got SUPER into podcasts last year and I honestly feel like they are life changing! It sounds so silly but really, I feel like I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time. If you need some podcast reccs, check out my blog post all about my fav podcasts!- https://www.trulyjamie.com/5-podcasts-you-need-in-your-life/

This year I want to continue listening to podcasts but I also have set a goal for myself to READ more! When I say “read”, that really means, “listen to audiobooks on Audible” LOL. Some of you may think it only counts if you’re physically reading the book but you guys… I JUST CAN’T. Who is with me? I have the hardest time taking in words on paper, it just doesn’t resonate. But, knowledge is power and I want to take in that information from books in some way.

If you’re interested in Audible, I’ll link it here. Not sponsored, just a huge fan!

Without further or do, here’s my list of books I will be reading this year. I have 2 sections- ‘Personal development’ and ‘Just for fun’. While I’m trying to take in knowledge and information, I also think it’s good to turn your brain off sometimes and just listen to something entertaining.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT READING LIST

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

I have been hearing about this one for a while now. & honestly, I feel like this book was probably made for me so I just need to read it already. If you’re like me and need some help giving less f*cks- add this to your list. Personally, I spend a lot of time worrying about things that I can’t control and I’d love to let that go as much as I can this year.

This is an excerpt from the summary, “There are only so many things we can give a f*ck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.”

You Are a Badass

I’m going to be honest, I don’t know much about this book apart from what’s on the cover. I have just been seeing it ALL over Instagram. It has been recommended like crazy by bloggers/business owners that I follow. From what I’ve heard and read in the summary, this is another book I need in my life. If you’re an over-thinker like me, I’m sure you need it too.

An excerpt from the summary, “Best-selling author, speaker, and world-traveling success coach Jen Sincero cuts through the din of the self-help genre with her own verbal meat cleaver in You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word.”

WorkParty

I have listened to Jaclyn Johnson on multiple podcasts so when I heard she wrote a book I knew I wanted to check it out! I love her story and the journey she’s been on while creating the well-known conference, Create and Cultivate! If you’re a creator like me, add this one to your list! I’m excited to read.

An excerpt from the summary, “Jaclyn Johnson – the founder and CEO behind Create & Cultivate, the fastest growing online platform and conference for millennial women in business – offers a rallying cry for a new generation of women who are redefining the meaning of work on their own terms: WorkParty. Women who want it all and more, and guess what? They can have it.”

A BOOK THAT SHOULD BE ON YOUR LIST IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT ALREADY
#GIRLBOSS

I have already read this one but wanted to include it. If you haven’t read this yet, you need to! I was legitimately sad when I finished because I enjoyed it so much! It’s written by Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal. This book is filled with tons of amazing business advice as well as some fun stories from her personal life. Sophia has another one of those inspiring ‘rags to riches’ like stories.

An excerpt from the summary, “The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion – it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was there that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal, a $100 million plus online fashion retailer with more than 350 employees. Sophia’s never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.”

JUST FOR FUN BOOKS

The Crazy Rich Asians series

Okay, these I’m dying to read. I saw the movie in theaters last year and LOVED IT! So far, there’s only been 1 movie, as I’m sure most of you know. But I want to read this rest before the next one comes out! I am constantly seeing people post about how good this series is so I’m super excited to get into this.

The summary of book one, “When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor. On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.”
